Ketamine for OCD Treatment in OCD Treatment Blanding
OCD affects 2.5 million adults or 1.2% of the U.S. population, and women are 3x more likely to be affected than men (ADAA).
Fortunately, new treatment options like ketamine infusion therapy brings new hope to those who have not been able to manage their OCD symptoms using conventional treatment methods.
Even more promising is how ketamine can provide fast relief for symptoms of Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Unlike many of the current medications and therapies that can take weeks or months to start working, many of our patients report feeling substantial relief after their very first ketamine infusion.
What Causes OCD?
There are numerous interpretations as to why people develop OCD. Some have suggested that it is inherited, while many others have said that life happenings can cause it. Others have proposed that it’s brought on by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Many different people and different scientists find different reasons more valuable than others. But the truth is, no one really knows.
What Are the Symptoms of OCD?
- The urge to arrange things in a certain way
- Meaningless repetition of words or actions
- Impulsivity
- Hypervigilance
- Compulsive hoarding
- Repetitive movements
- Food aversion
- Excessive anxiety
How Does Ketamine for OCD Treatment Work?
It is believed that one of the leading causes of OCD and various other mood disorders is the overactivity of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor in the brain. Ketamine helps OCD by attaching to the NMDA receptor and blocking it from being activated by glutamate, a neurotransmitter, thereby helping to mute the effects of OCD symptoms.
By connecting to those receptors, ketamine may be able to amplify the number of glutamate neurotransmitters in the empty space between neurons. Glutamate then interacts with the AMPA receptors.
Together, these receptors bring about the discharge of multiple molecules that boost the brain’s neuroplasticity – essentially, ketamine infusions allow the brain to reset and restore important nerve connections.
What Does Ketamine Treatment Feel Like?
During your OCD Treatment Blanding, we go above and beyond to make sure all of our patients feel as comfortable as possible in their own private rooms. Infusions typically last 45-60 minutes for mood disorders, while infusions for chronic pain conditions require a larger dose.
A number of patients refer to a “dissociative” effect, and most of our patients respond positively to this sensation. In many cases, this dissociation effect is what aids with your treatment and delivers a positive response to ketamine therapy.
These are all ordinary components of the treatment. You will always remain in a safe atmosphere with our team there to monitor you and be readily available during your infusion.
Does Ketamine Really Work for OCD Treatment?
In one recent ketamine research study, it was once again proven that ketamine can provide rapid relief for patients with OCD symptoms.
This is the first randomized, controlled trial to demonstrate that a drug affecting glutamate neurotransmission can reduce OCD symptoms without the presence of an SRI and is consistent with a glutamatergic hypothesis of OCD.
As the leading ketamine treatment provider in Blanding, we look forward to helping our patients get back to enjoying the things they love to do with the people they love.
